This is a flying piggy needle felting tutorial for advanced beginner needle felters. This tutorial is not too complicated, but there are some small details like ears, the snout and the heart on the pig’s body that require some precision. The wings are probably the most difficult part.
“When pigs fly” is an adynation, or a figure of speech describing something that will never happen. In this tutorial, I demonstrate how to make a kawaii flying piggy using needle felting. This can serve as a little memento reminding you that anything can happen.
I am adapting a tutorial from a Japanese needle felting book called 羊羊毛（Sheep’s Wool) フェルト（Felt) の (no – possessive) ラシキ（Lucky) どうぶつ （Animal) マツコシト(Mascot), or “Sheep’s Wool Felt Lucky Animal Mascot”. Ok, I’m not going to lie, that was difficult for me to translate and required some dictionary usage. I’m currently learning Japanese and it is not easy!! I am not really able to read the directions in this book… I just kind of follow the pictures and try to mimic them. I realized after I was done creating the flying piggy that in the book, the piggy’s wings and heart are made of white wool, not light pink! So if you want to make this substitution of white for pink wool, feel free to do so. Actually, when using my tutorials, I encourage you to get creative and make as many substitutions as you want! For instance, you can give the piggy a blue body instead of a dark pink one. Or put a star on his or her body instead of a heart.
Hope you enjoy this tutorial!
