I’ve been wanting to make the Toy Story peas for some time now, and here it is! I finally found the perfect colored neon green wool by the Japanese brand Flufeel. I used Daiso wool to make the pea pod.
This Toy Story peas needle felting tutorial for beginner needle felters. It is a relatively easy project. The three round balls are straightforward. The pea pod is a little more difficult to make than the balls and requires some patience. It takes a while to get the green wool to mat together because it’s such a large piece compared to the 3 balls. Just keep poking. Bear in mind that it took me about 30 minutes to make the pea pod. My daughter was getting very impatient with me while I made this and cried throughout much of the video… good thing I’m able to mute the volume on my videos and cover them up with music! For this reason, I usually try to keep my projects under an hour. She liked the final product, though!
Since this involved making three identical green balls, I also took this opportunity to test out the efficiency of my needles. I wanted to know how much time a felting pen actually saved. I saved about 8 minutes using a felting pen versus the single needle. With a single needle, it took me 20 minutes to create a ball out of 2 grams of wool. With a double pointed and triple pointed felting pen, it took 12 minutes to create the same ball of wool. I think this efficiency would be even greater for a larger piece of wool. To my surprise, the triple pointed felting pen was no more efficient than the double pointed felting pen! The triple pointed felting pen by Clover cost me about $9-10 at a Japanese craft store (also available on Amazon), while the double pointed felting pen cost me less than $1 at Daiso. I will say that the Clover pen did result in a smoother end product, however. There weren’t as many bumps and at the end, my wool looked a little more finished. But in terms of efficiency, the triple pointed pen didn’t seem to save me any time!
